Creating employment•In FY23, the tourism sector in India accounts for 35 million jobs, a growth of 8.3% over the last year (2022).•The Hotels' Association of India (HAI) stated that the hospitality and tourism sector anticipates generating 50 million direct and indirect employment opportunities in the next 5-7 years.3. Lighthouse & Cruse Tourism•Government has identified 78 lighthouses ascentres of tourism and five ports as cruisetourism hubs to boost lighthouse and cruisetourism in India.1. Contribution to GDP above world average•In2023,thetravel&tourismindustry’scontribution to the GDP is estimated over US$199.3 billion; this is expected to reach US$ 512billion by 2028.•In India, the industry’s direct contribution to theGDP is expected to record an annual growthrate of 7-9% between 2019 and 2030.•Revenue from religious tourism destinationsalmost doubled to Rs. 1,34,543 crore (US$16.2 billion) in 2022 from Rs. 65,070 crore(US$ 7.8 billion) in 2021, as per the Ministry ofTourism.5. New policy rollout plan•To ease travel for international tourists, theGovernmentofIndiahaslaunchedascheme wherein five lakh tourists will getfree visas.4. Higher investment•TheEmergencyCreditLineGuaranteeScheme (ECLGS) covered through a liberaldefinition of MSME (micro small and mediumenterprises) has been expanded to includetourismandhospitalitystakeholders.Infrastructure status has been granted toexhibition-cum-convention centres.•A separate liquidity window of Rs. 15,000crore (US$ 1.81 billion) has been releasedfor the sector.•The Rs. 85,000 crore (US$ 10.2 billion)investmentinAyodhya,includingtheestablishmentofanewairport,therefurbishment of the railway station, thecreation of a township, and enhanced roadconnectivity, is poised to turn the city into avibrant center for spiritual tourism and serveasarolemodelforpromotingspiritualtourism.6. New visa reforms•Visa reforms include a significantly expanded Golden Visascheme, a five-year Green residency and new entrypermits, including one for job seekers.
