It’s about making a difference for people and the planet, and being transparent about the change we’re creating together. That’s why we’ve made it a priority to understand – together with our community and industry peers – just how much secondhand shopping displaces the need to buy new. When we first measured our “displacement rate” in 2022, we aimed to give our community and the wider industry meaningful insight into the benefits of circular fashion. Then in 2023, we published our, allowing us to estimate how secondhand purchases made on Depop avoided the environmental impact of brand new items. We realized that credible progress requires consistent measurement when it comes to the environmental impact of secondhand purchases. That’s why we called for a standardized, industry-wide approach to measuring displacement – because we know that collective action and collaboration are essential for lasting change. Environmental Impact Measurement MethodologyWorking alongside The Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) and industry peers, we’re proud to have contributed to the 2025 "" report, so we can set a new standard – together. It provides a standardized approach to measuring how circular fashion practices, specifically resale and repair, offset the demand for new clothing. For us, the displacement rate is more than just a metric. It ensures that the positive environmental impact of every secondhand purchase is grounded in data that everyone can trust. Our adoption of this shared methodology reaffirms our commitment to impact and transparency, and provides our community and the wider industry with credible data that we can all use to drive meaningful change.Displacement Rates Untangled– Head of Sustainability, Cathy MoscardiniIntroduction04Displacement research 2025The research05The purpose of this research is to highlight the extent to which purchases made on Depop prevent the purchase of new items. In November 2024, in collaboration with WRAP, Depop conducted research via a survey of our buyers. The survey results enable us to calculate our updated displacement rate, in line with the developed with WRAP. This methodology was verified by an expert review process, incorporated cognitive testing to ensure clarity and understanding among respondents, and was validated through an industry pilot in which Depop actively participated. Notably, this updated methodology accounts for impulse purchases and the inherent uncertainty in predicting consumer behavior. The result? A more conservative and robust displacement rate
