Freight transport, including supporting facilities such as warehouses and ports, accounts for 11% of global greenhouse gas emissions and is also one of the hardest-to-abate sectors globally. Digitalization and technological advancements, together with evolving and shifting trade flows, provide an opportunity to enhance operational efficiencies, cut emissions and drive industry growth and competitiveness. Emerging markets and developing economies (EMDEs), at varying levels of technology and business model readiness, are already making notable progress by embracing state-of-the-art innovations to support the green transitions of the logistics sector.As part of the Net-zero Opportunities for Value-chain Action (NOVA) initiative, this report, developed by the World Economic Forum in collaboration with Boston Consulting Group (BCG), provides an overview of innovative technologies and new business models that have been deployed to accelerate the sector’s green transition in EMDEs.
