These digital services add value beyond simply connecting passengers with drivers; they also create opportunities and upward mobility. For Brazilian women, ride-hailing platforms provide a path to increased economic participation and empowerment.Women in Brazil face gender-specific barriers that inhibit their integration into the workforce. Socio-economic factors may limit women’s access to private modes of transportation, such as automobiles, due to disparities in income and employment opportunities. Women are also less likely to travel on public transportation during non-peak hours due to personal safety concerns. Improving transportation options with a focus on safety and reliability, along with policies addressing economic inequality, can help reduce these barriers. Ride-hailing services can play a role in mitigating these challenges by offering secure, reliable, and flexible transportation alternatives. In collaboration with Uber, Oxford Economics conducted an online survey of 3,500 frequent riders in Brazil to explore the influence of ride-hailing platforms on women’s economic participation in that country. Our study provides compelling evidence that ride-hailing services assist women in overcoming transportation barriers to workforce participation. This research holds significant implications for policymakers, who can drive broader economic benefits at both national and municipal levels by fostering environments that enhance women’s economic participation.DemographicsData for this study was collected through an online survey conducted during December 2024 and January 2025.
