Founded on 1 January 2015, SECU wascreated to ensure accountability toindividuals and communities who may beaffected by UNDP-supported activities. SECUis located within UNDP’s independent Officeof Audit and Investigations (OAI). SECUinvestigates alleged non-compliance withUNDP’s Social and Environmental Standards(SES) and other relevant policies andrecommends measures to address findingsof non-compliance. Reflecting on this journey, I am filled with gratitude for theremarkable progress the unit has achieved together.When SECU was first established, it was a fledgling unit with just a couple ofpart-time, highly committed, consultants. Today, it stands as a robust team offour full-time staff, a team of expert compliance officers, and enthusiastic internsworking with dedication and skill to uphold the principles of social andenvironmental accountability at UNDP. This transformation is a testament to thecollective determination, expertise, and vision of everyone who has contributedto SECU’s mission over the years; UNDP remains strongly committed to socialand environmental accountability, and the Office of Audit and Investigations(OAI) continues to fully support SECU in its activities.I had the privilege of starting my journey with SECU under the guidance ofRichard Bissell, whose experience and expertise were instrumental in shapingboth my understanding of compliance and the foundations of this unit.
