While traditional prenatal screening methods, such as first-trimester combined tests and amniocentesis, have long been used to detect these conditions, they often come with limitations. These methods can result in high false-positive rates, and invasive procedures carry a risk of miscarriage. This has prompted many countries to adopt Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT), a safer, highly accurate alternative for detecting chromosomal abnormalities through a simple maternal blood test. Globally, NIPT has been widely accepted, with countries such as the United States, Germany, and the Netherlands2, 4, 5, 7 integrating it into standard prenatal care. However, its accessibility and usage still vary depending on national healthcare policies and insurance coverage.In Abu Dhabi, the healthcare system is world-class, providing high-quality maternal care that is comparable to Western countries. In July 2024, the Department of Health (DOH) updated its guidelines to include NIPT as a recommended test for high-risk pregnancies,3 such as those in women over 35 or with a family history of chromosomal abnormalities.
