Conclusion 28Methodology 30TABLE OF CONTENTS2Shell’s socioeconomic impact in the United Kingdom, 2022Since our last study assessing Shell’s economic footprint in the UK in 2019, the world economy has become increasingly fragile due to the Covid-19 pandemic, rising energy prices, and continuing geopolitical tensions. Despite this backdrop, Shell continues to provide a reliable source of energy that the UK needs to power its industries, transport networks, and homes. During the same period, Shell itself has also undergone internal transformations such as the announcement and appointment of the new CEO in 2022 and relocation of its global headquarters from the Hague to London.Shell is active in every area of the energy industry. Its activities include oil & gas exploration, operating gas & liquid plants, running petrol stations, building electric vehicle charging infrastructure, investing in renewable energy sources, and conducting research & development into new technologies to reduce emissions and support the UK’s transition to net zero. In this report, we assess the socioeconomic contribution Shell made to the UK in 2022. This comprehensive study quantifies not only the substantial impact of Shell UK’s direct on-site operations, but also the indirect impact stimulated by the overall group’s supply chain spending, and the induced impact supported through wage-funded consumption by Shell UK’s employees and those working in its supply chains. These impacts are quantified in terms of gross value added contributions to GDP, the number of jobs supported, and government tax revenues raised, as well as other important social metrics to assess the company’s impact on society. Shell makes substantial economic and social contributions to the UK economy. Across all three channels of impact, the company contributed an estimated £11.8 billion to the UK GDP in 2022, equivalent £1 for every £210 of the UK’s GDP. Shell also supported 78,000 jobs in the UK and £5.4 billion payments to government in the same year.11 Definitions of all socioeconomic metrics used in the report are listed in the annex.EXECUTIVE SUMMARY£11.8 billionShell’s total gross value added contribution to the UK’s GDP in 2022. 78,000 Total j
