All rights reserved. | R2332 About This Study This study was done in collaboration with the National Council for Community and Education Partnerships (NCCEP) and Alliance College-Ready Public Schools (Alliance). This report is the third and last in our series—Examining the Efficacy of Career & College Clubs. This report explores how the COVID-19 pandemic impacted the learning and skill development of a cohort of over 900 students from Alliance who were enrolled in Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) and have used the Career & College Clubs (CCC) curriculum since 9th grade.So What? This study focused on a cohort of students from historically underserved backgrounds, many of whom will be the first in their families to attend postsecondary education. The findings provide insight into students’ learning experiences and skills over their entire high school career. More specifically, as the pandemic unfolded, the study examined how students coped with the events brought on by COVID-19, including their reactions to learning online, their perceived social supports, their studying habits, development of their social and emotional skills, and their postsecondary plans. Now What? The results of this study add to what we know about the use of the CCC curriculum during GEAR UP programming in helping to build high school students’ college and career readiness skills. Students were able to develop their skills despite the disruptions caused by the pandemic. A list of actionable implications for practitioners is included in the report. The center conducts research on social and emotional skill assessment and development, learner navigation, and workforce applications. With expertise across a broad range of psychological disciplines (clinical, educational, experimental, personality, social, quantitative, and vocational), the team is an active thought leader in the field of education and workforce skills. The team examines ways of improving the measurement and development of a variety of skills across the elementary–workforce continuum and has increasingly focused its research on topics that address the needs of students from historically underserved populations.
