They are adopting cloud-native architectures and building platforms not only for operational and business support systems (OSS / BSS) but also for their networks. It’s a completely different way of working.“We are not just in front of the traditional evolution… Here, we are doing something that is totally more holistic,” says Philippe Ensarguet, VP of Software Engineering at Orange. “It’s about the culture, the process, the methodology, the people and the technology. It is something that is absolutely global. And because it’s global, we can say that only the companies that decide to do this revolution will have the full benefits regarding their strategy... We are in front of something that is very, very deep.”To address a wide skills gap, CSPs are implementing talent acquisition programs to recruit thousands of new software engineers, and they are partnering with universities and trade schools to hire recent graduates. But telcos simply aren’t as attractive to younger workers who prefer to join startups and techcos offering more agile and diverse workplaces and higher salaries.This means CSPs must also acquire skills by reskilling and upskilling their existing employees, and via partnerships with systems integrators and suppliers. Indeed, our research for this report finds that these approaches are equally if not more important than hiring.Communications service providers (CSPs) are embracing modern, cloud-native architectures as they aim to become techcos capable of engaging easily with customers and partners via digital platforms. It’s clear that this transition requires revolutionary cultural change and the insourcing of talent to fill roles ranging from software and DevOps engineers, to data analytics and AI specialists, to cybersecurity experts.
